02 Mar The Resilience of Place: Three Stories of Economic Reinvention
Reinvention is rarely a choice made in comfort; it is a necessity born of change. When a cornerstone industry shifts or a major employer moves, the communities that thrive are those that refuse to be defined by what they used to be. Economic development in these moments requires more than just new infrastructure—it requires a fundamental shift in how the community sees itself and how it is perceived by the world.
This is where strategic branding becomes essential. It is the bridge between a city’s industrial legacy and its future potential, signaling to investors and residents alike that a new chapter has begun.
At North Star Place Branding + Marketing, we have partnered with several communities to help them navigate these “unexpected shifts” and turn them into a new competitive advantage.
Manchester, NH: Anything But Run of the Mill
Manchester’s history is woven into its massive brick millyards, once the heart of the global textile industry. When the industrial revolution faded, these structures stood as silent monuments to the past. The path to reinvention wasn’t about tearing them down, but repurposing them for a new age of innovation.
Today, those same mills are the epicenter of the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI) and a world-class bio-tech cluster. Our branding work for the city leaned directly into this evolution. The tagline “Anything But Run of the Mill” honors Manchester’s gritty, industrial DNA while highlighting its evolution into a quirky, high-tech, and culturally sophisticated city. It tells site selectors that Manchester isn’t just a place where things used to happen—it’s where the future of medicine is being built.
East Peoria, IL: East to Excellence
For generations, East Peoria was synonymous with Caterpillar Inc. (CAT). When the corporate headquarters moved, the city faced the classic challenge of the “company town.” Rather than waiting for a single employer to fill the void, East Peoria pivoted toward economic diversification and regional tourism.
The city transformed a former brownfield into the Levee District—a $100+ million mixed-use epicenter that has become a regional hub for shopping and dining. By investing in its riverfront, including the area surrounding the par-a-dice riverboat casino, East Peoria has successfully navigated the shift from a specialized manufacturing town to a vibrant commercial powerhouse. The brand we developed, “East to Excellence,” serves as a standard of quality, positioning the city as a premier destination for those looking for growth and stability across the river.
East Hartford, CT: Elevate Here
As the smaller neighbor to Connecticut’s capital, East Hartford’s identity has long been rooted in the precision of aerospace engineering, most notably as the home of Pratt & Whitney. Reinvention here has been about literally taking flight in a new direction.
The city took Rentschler Field—a former Pratt & Whitney airfield—and transformed it into a premier 40,000-seat stadium and a massive logistics and technology hub. This shift, along with the ongoing revitalization of the Silver Lane corridor, proves that a community can honor its manufacturing roots while modernizing its economic engine. East Hartford’s brand, “Elevate Here,” speaks to this aviation heritage while serving as a bold invitation to businesses and families.
